3 Most Popular Interior Design Styles

Updated: June 17, 2022 by Shana Yuri

Interior design styles vary in their popularity, but some are almost timeless and remain popular for decades and longer, and throughout many parts of the world.

Here are three interior design styles that have stood the test of time and are among the most popular interior design services in Massachusetts.

1. Traditional Interior Design

This design is described as timeless, elegant, formal, and classy. While it is much more formal than other styles, it is beautiful, nonetheless.

You’d expect this design to include elements from homes from centuries ago, like candlesticks, painted portraits, and dramatic drapes.

A traditional home design can take a bit of work because it’s such a refined style. It will encompass darkish timber finishes, patterned couches and chairs, solid-color drapes, and gold accents.

You could watch the movie “Clue” (1985) to see what a traditional home looks like because this film highlights these key characteristics!

Leather couches, bookshelves, and lace tablecloths will help you achieve the traditional look. Even the bedrooms and bathrooms should include subtle nods to this style to give authenticity and allow your entire space to feel cohesive.

While traditional is a more expensive styling option, it’s worth it if you love this look. While traditional is in a greater higher price range, it’s well worth it if you love this appearance.

Keep a look out at antique stores for some great deals that would be a perfect fit for this type of home.

2. Mid-Century Modern

This is defined as a laugh, exciting, precise, and purposeful fun design. If you love old accents and subtle nods to the traditional style but enjoy a contemporary and stylish home, then this may be the design for you.

Traditional features like unique chandeliers, updated wood paneling, vaulted ceilings, and dramatic drapes are often part of this design. You will find these classic features seamlessly paired with modern lines and clean surfaces.

Sleek modern furniture, a neutral color pallet, color in unexpected places, and contemporary conveniences are part of the design.

Decorating for mid-century modern begins with a neutral pallet and then a single specific color is added in some kind of unexpected way.

When it comes to choosing furniture, you will want slanted legs and sleek lines to give your spaces an interesting and functional element. Add on diffused decor and accents to ensure the entire design does not overwhelm.

Keep it fun and interesting; include modern takes on traditional elements like light fixtures or decor. Make use of a unique blend of old and new but remember to keep things functional and unique if possible.

3. Rustic Interior Design

This design is excellently defined as genuine, natural, antique, and handmade.

Even when you live in the city you can bring a touch of the country into your home. Exposed wooden beams, a choice of vintage-style hand-crafted rugs and neutral colors make all the difference.

Rustic houses bring that ‘no place like home’ feeling of welcome and warmth. This is achieved using authentic elements. You must search for antique decor or accents from flea markets, vintage shops, or property sales.

Include herbal stone for a kitchen backsplash of natural stone or to border the fireplace. This stone look and texture will add hand-crafted originality to the home, giving the feeling that it was there all along.

A floor of robust hardwood or tile is any other key rustic element. When using reclaimed wood as the ceiling beams or by turning it into furniture you will be completing this authentic look.

Exposed timber offers an antique and natural appearance. Then for a contemporary touch, include a unique rug, pottery vases, and impartial décor, to make your house appear undying and seamless.

While these three design styles are wildly famous, your Interior Designer can gain an understanding of your preferences and introduce you to a style that is the right fit for you.
