Standard Garage Dimensions and Sizes for 1, 2, 3 and 4 Car garages

Standard Garage Dimensions

When it comes to getting the right garage dimensions, things can get really tricky. The first thing you need to find out is what you are going to do with it. Once you do, then you need to start finding out the average sizes of each garage type that you may need.

Whether it is for your one, two, or three cars in it, make sure that you know the standard garage size first. After that, you get to decide the kind of garage dimensions that you need. Of course, it is hard to decide, because one size may not fit all. Check these out one by one before you make up your minds.

One-Car Garage Dimensions

How wide is a garage of one car, usually? This type of garage is popular for townhouses in the city. With so little space, this garage can only keep one car inside, at least a regular sedan.

If you are curious, here are the key points when it comes to one-car garage dimensions in general:

  • Garage doorway: 9′ wide
  • Garage interior: 12′ wide
  • Depth: 20′

The garage door sizesmay vary, but as long as there is still a 2.8’ clearance on each of the car’s side, you are still safe. At least you still have enough space to exit your car without having to suffocate. If you are here to celebrate the function of the garage with them together, hopefully, you know how to properly clean your garage.

Two-Car Garage Dimensions

What about a garage of two cars? How wide is it usually? This type of garage is the most popular, especially if you live in big cities and have a big family. In fact, some families have one big car (like a van or an SUV), and another one is a regular sedan.

If you are curious about this, then here are the key points when it comes to two-car garage dimensions in general:

  • Garage doorway (double door): 16′ wide
  • Garage interior: 18′ wide
  • Depth: 20′

The garage dimensions for this one should have the minimum size of 20’ x 20’. This is for extra space to get in and out of the car. In fact, some may suggest that you have it 24’ x 24’ – just to be on the safe side.

Of course, there are challenges regarding owning a two-car garage:

  • You might need to store your garden tools and other accessories elsewhere. You may not be able to put your workbench in the garage, because there is hardly enough space left.
  • The width of the garage should be 8’, not 9’ or 10’. Your two cars might fit in easily with the help of an extra mirror as you back into your garage.
  • A 24’ x 24’ garage dimension is much better. If it is 20’ x 20’, you may accidentally scratch your car door when you get out of the car in a hurry. Better be safe than sorry.

Three-Car Garage Dimensions

This type of garage is rare, even when you live in big cities. However, this does not mean this is unusual. Big families with more money usually have a three-car garage, especially when they have at least a teenage kid learning how to drive.

For three-car garage dimensions in general, here are the key points:

  • Garage doorway (the single door): 8′ wide
  • Garage doorway (double door): 16′ wide
  • Garage interior: 28′ wide
  • Bay depth: 20′

In short, the garage sizes for this one are usually 32’ x 22’. Families who own this type of garage usually have at least one big car (a van or an SUV) and two smaller ones (regular sedans). Some others may also have two big cars and one smaller one. It is not common for them to have all three big cars.

However, that does not mean the latter is impossible. If that is the case, then they definitely need to have a bigger garage than what they have already got.

Four-Car Garage Dimensions

Very, very rare, but that does not mean this is impossible. If you live in a big city, you might need to have a wider property area for this. Many people who live in a luxurious area might own this. They can be a big family with more than one teenage kid driving or two families as relatives living together.

Here are the key points:

  • Garage doorway (double door): 16′ wide (each)
  • Garage interior: 36′ wide
  • Bay depth: 22′

With this type of garage, you can have two smaller cars (regular sedans) and two bigger ones (vans or SUVs). In some cases, people can even put a motorcycle in it between the larger, four-wheeled vehicles.

There can also be varieties regarding a four-car garage dimension. You can have all existing vehicles in it arranged in a single file. This means the garage should be wider. If not, you can park the first two on the first file and the rest behind them.

It may be quite a hassle because sometimes you need to take all the cars out to get the one you really want. Then again, that is the risk of owning a four-car garage. Some people even prefer parking their motorcycle in a different garage.

Other Types of Garage Arrangements

If you have more than three cars, you need a showroom-like garage instead of a regular one. This means owning a separate property from your house, just for your cars. Living in the central part of a big city is impossible with this arrangement since there is not enough space.

The height of the garage also needs to be considered, especially if your SUV is above average height. Some people may need to store something on the top of their SUV. For example, a surfing board. The recommended height for your garage should be at least 2.1 – 2.4 m.

Some people prefer having a garage attached to their home building, while others need to have it separately. (This goes especially if you have more than three cars). Either way, make sure that you get your garage dimensions right.
