One of the newest, most popular types of home automation or smart home technology is the smart lock. These devices let you lock and unlock your home’s front door without a key, and they offer many other features.

1. What are Smart Locks?

A smart lock contains sophisticated technology that connects to a variety of devices, allowing you to lock and unlock your front door with several methods.

With a smart lock, you and your family members won’t have to worry about getting locked out.

You can also give guests the ability to enter and leave without a key, then change your smart lock’s settings to take that permission away after they’re no longer staying with you.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth is a popular short-range type of wireless communication, and its range is usually about 20 to 30 feet. When your smartphone is near this type of smart lock, you can use it to lock or unlock it.

You can also control some types of smart locks with smart home hubs that can communicate with devices like smart thermostats or doorbell cameras as well.

Since hubs use Wi-Fi along with Bluetooth, they have longer ranges. You can lock or unlock your door by sending a message to a hub with your phone, even when you’re away from your house.

Bluetooth locks use less power than Wi-Fi models, so their batteries often last longer.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi smart locks are usually bulkier than Bluetooth models because they need more batteries. They can have ranges of up to 300 feet, and they can provide cloud control, local control, or both without an additional hub.

Biometric

A biometric lock uses fingerprint, voice, or facial recognition to identify people. It only works for a person after they get permission to enter your home and submit their fingerprints or a photo.
