8 Most Common Types of Window Blinds

Published date: April 14, 2021 by Abraham Abie

To shield windows and sometimes glass doors, regular curtains are often used. However, sometimes curtains can be a bit of a hassle. The alternative for that is to use blinds instead. There are types of blinds that you can choose here. Each of them requires different ways to clean up.

From vertical blinds to skylight blinds, there are types of blinds to be considered. Some of the blinds for windows can be quite expensive. It is wise to prepare a proper budget for it. Make sure you also choose the most suitable ones for your windows at home.

To gain more knowledge in blind types, here are the special words related to them:

  • Cleat is a plastic hook that is necessary for child safety. This hook is pinned on blinds with free hanging cords.
  • Louvres of slats are individual pieces of fabric, wood, or other materials used for the blinds. They are usually what make thick blinds. These are also vertical blinds instead of horizontal. They are tilted to control lights and gain privacy.
  • Wand is a long, thin, plastic device. It is used to close and tilt blinds, both also for privacy and light control.
  • Sidewinder is a control mechanism. This is used in roller blinds and Roman blinds. It is fitted with a bobbled chain.

Table of Contents

  • 1. Vertical Blinds
  • 2. Romand Blinds
  • 3. Roller Blinds
  • 4. Venetian Blinds
  • 5. Wooden Blinds
  • 6. Fauxwood Blinds
  • 7. Pleated Blinds
  • 8. Perfect Fit Blinds

1. Vertical Blinds

These are the most favorite blinds. You can see people who go buying blinds like these. With vertical lengths of fabric, you can tilt them up and down – both for privacy and light control. Just tilt and pull them up with a wand.

These blinds are great for all rooms. To clean them up, use baby wipes or vacuum them with the upholstery attachment.

2. Romand Blinds

Contrary to vertical blinds, Roman blinds are horizontal. They have soft folds of fabric that can be folded into a decorative pelmet when you pull them up. There is a deluxe headrail with a chain and a sidewinder.

You can have Roman blinds in your bedrooms, living rooms, and dining rooms. If you are into something more luxurious in style, you can also apply these blinds in other rooms at home. To clean them up, use a vacuum with an upholstery attachment. If you prefer dry-cleaning, check out the fabric blinds first.

3. Roller Blinds

These blinds are fabric wraps that are neatly rolled around a tube at the window’s top. You can lift them up or lower them down with the sidewinder with a plastic chain. As one of the most versatile options, roller blinds are great for all rooms.

To clean them up, wipe with a dry cloth to avoid leaving them wet. These blinds also have different types: water-resistant (dry-clean), flame-retardant, and with PVC finishes. They can also come in various patterns and designs, especially if you want to get trendy.

To some people, roller blinds are easier to maintain, because they are usually not as heavy as vertical blinds.

4. Venetian Blinds

Great for all rooms, these venetian blinds are metal horizontal slats. Its tilt is there to control both light and privacy. Just use it to adjust louvres and the cord to lift and lower them.

Venetian blinds are perfect to ward off peeping toms from outside. Simply use a dry cloth to clean them up. The problem may start when one of the metal slats crack, or the tilt is broken. That is when you need to have them changed with the new ones.

5. Wooden Blinds

Wooden blinds are also heavy, either to lift and lower or in maintenance. The slats are obviously made of wood, with tilts for light and privacy control. Use the cords to lift, lower, and also tilt the slats.

These blinds are also perfect for bedrooms, dining rooms, and living rooms. They also work wonders in warding off peeping toms. To clean them up, just use a dry-cloth. Wooden blinds can also come in a variety of stains and painted colors.

If you do not feel like using cords, you can change them with  a super sleek, contrasting and coordinating tape.

6. Fauxwood Blinds

If you think wooden blinds are prone to termites, then choose these instead. The horizontal slats have a wooden effect, although they are not made of real wood. To operate these, just use the cords to lift, lower, and also tilt the slats.

Although fauxwood blinds are great for all rooms at home, kitchens and bathrooms are better choices to have them. You can either clean them up with a damp or dry cloth.

These fauxwood blinds can also be customized by size. You may have them with 38 mm, 50 mm, and 63 mm slabs.

7. Pleated Blinds

Pleated blinds usually have concertina or honeycombs fold of fabric. Great for all rooms, these blinds also use cords to lift and lower them. To clean them up, simply use a dry cloth.

Pleated blinds also have other benefits. They can gain thermal efficiency in the room, so the temperature is comfortable throughout the whole year and more. If you live in a four-seasoned country, these blinds are for you. Some have light-filtering styles that are perfect for summer.

8. Perfect Fit Blinds

If you prefer something more discreet, these blinds are perfectly tight. They leave no space for any peeping toms to peek in. These blinds are in a discreet frame – and the frame clips between the glazing and the beating of uPVC windows.

For these maximum-security type of blinds, all you need to do is clear the wand, then use the tab handle to tilt the slats. The tab handle is there to raise and lower the blinds.

These are the most common types of blinds. There are also skylight blinds, but they are only used for houses that have skylights in the ceiling. Cleaning them up may require an extra effort, especially if the ceiling is pretty high from where you stand.

If you have made up your mind, then it is time to start buying blinds. When it comes to types of blinds, choose wisely.
