How to Properly Clean Your Windows and Glass Door

Even though it does not look like a hard household chore, window cleaning can still be quite tedious.

Every time they need to clean them, most people have to deal with a mess of streaks that is a result of spraying and wiping.

And it is understandable that after so much work, it is not pleasant to look at windows and glass doors that are not spotless.

Luckily, there are a few tricks that can turn this around. As with anything else, when you take care of your glass, you have to use just the right tools.

And the best thing is, you can do it with very little effort and expense.

So, to learn how to get those spotless glass doors and windows you see in commercials read through the tips written below.

1. First things first – dust them

The first thing you need to do when it comes to cleaning glass is brushing down all the dust from them. You can use a dusting wand or a dust-pan brush, or anything similar you might have.

That way, you will be able to remove all the built-up dirt and grime. The best way to do it is to start from the top and work your way down.

However, if there are any cracks on the windows or doors, be careful because it can be dangerous to clean them, as they might break.

So, if you want to be safe and have all of them look spotless, check out glazing installers in your area. From there on, if you maintain them regularly, you will have commercial-worthy glass doors and windows.

2. Use distilled water

As people see commercials for glass cleaning products every day, they rarely think about one thing that can have one of the biggest impacts – water.

The quality of tap water can wildly vary from place to place. If its quality is not too good, you might not notice it when cleaning your floor or countertops.

However, glass is very sensitive and can show every little impurity and imperfection.

If your tap water is hard, that is, if it has a higher concentration of things such as calcium and magnesium, it is no wonder if your windows are streaky.

And if you combine it with a bad glass cleaner, the results might look even more disappointing.

So, the next time you decide to clean the glass surfaces in your home, make sure to use distilled water. After the first use, you will see a major difference.

3. Keep things simple – use vinegar

When most people think of perfect shiny windows, they think it is necessary to use fancy cleaning products. But, to clean any glass surface in your house, you can just use vinegar.

Nowadays, there are many cleaning products that include vinegar and the best one is surely the distilled white vinegar.

Not only will it do a good job cleaning your windows, but is also antibacterial, it is non-toxic and safe for skin, children as well as pets.

So, no matter if you are looking for a cheaper option, or you are out of your usual cleaner, use vinegar to clean glass.

Mix the vinegar with warm distilled water at a 50/50 ratio, load the spray bottle, spritz your windows, and watch it wipe away everything. And do not worry about the smell of it, it will fade quite quickly.

4. Avoid soap

Soap is definitely a great tool to use for many cleaning purposes. But, if you use it incorrectly, it will leave ugly streaks on your windows.

So, if you are able to, try to avoid it. However, if it is truly necessary to use, make sure you minimize the amount you use.

A little bit can go a long way, it can do the job well, and it will not create such a big problem with streaks.

5. Never use paper towels

Contrary to popular belief, using paper towels is not at all effective. In fact, using this method can make things even worse.

When you use them on a glass surface, they will not only leave those streaks you are trying to get rid of, but they will also leave tiny pieces behind, making your job even harder.

Instead, clean with microfiber cloths or squeegees. They will do a much better job at cleaning, and will not leave any heavy streaks.

However, if you would like to opt for a cheaper option, you can always use newspapers. It is an old trick, but it can still do a really good job!  In any case, almost anything is better than using paper towels.

If done right, cleaning windows and glass doors does not have to be hard at all. Make sure to follow all the tips from this article and enjoy looking at your clean, spotless windows!
