Essential Household Items You Need To Clean To Control the Spread of Diseases

Updated: October 19, 2022 by Shana Yuri

Disease and viruses can be difficult to trace. Most disease-causing germs will stay active on various surfaces, ready to infect the next host.

The surfaces act as reservoirs as far as the conditions support the growth, multiplication, or survival of the disease agents.

Well, some items or parts of your household can harbor a variety of germs, and thus require thorough cleaning and sanitization to keep you and your family safe from infection.

In this piece, we shall cover a few essential household parts and items that need to constantly be cleaned to curb the spread of diseases and viruses, including Covid-19.

1. Everyday Use-Items

We are all germ-victims when it comes to shopping, ordering food out, watching our favorite shows, and using tech devices.

In a recent report on swabs taken by compare the market, the toilet was cited as among the dirtiest parts of the household, but not more than supermarket trolleys, remotes, and takeaway containers.

It cited the supermarket bag, keys, the iPad, phone, and laptop as among the household items you want to clean twice to ensure that you haven’t missed any germs, including Covid-19.

In a nutshell, the report indicated that some of the dirtiest household items include:

  • Shopping trolleys
  • The remotes
  • Takeaway containers
  • Tech devices (iPad, phone, laptop)
  • Headphones
  • Keys
  • Shopping bags
  • Doormat
  • Kitchen bins

2. Bathroom and Toilet Surfaces

Sanitizing surfaces and cleaning effectively has become a routine in the house. The washroom is known to be the room with the most germs with the toilet and basin have the highest chances of infection if it is not clean.

Take note of the objects that you are handling and be sure to give them a good scrubbing with disinfectant. Regular washes of hand towels and bathmats are a must as the fabric can easily harbor germs due to the high amounts of moisture.

The walls and all the surfaces in that room should be cleaned more than once a week.

3. Doorknobs and Handles

Without a doubt, these are also among the most used and touched surfaces in the house.

Every time you touch a handle, whether it be for the fridge, oven or door, you unknowingly leave behind germs that are on your hands and pick up germs that were multiplying on the handle, spreading the microscopic germs further.

The best tip we have for readers is to keep wet wipes on top of the appliances or nearby to draw the attention of anyone who wants access.

You can also have a spray disinfectant cleaner in use to help deal with the germs. Wash your hands regularly, especially before eating.

4. Light Switches

We have to use switches to light rooms to see, charge our phones, warm the food, and use the laptop, among other appliance-related activities in the house.

Since they are frequently touched – perhaps by different people in the household – you should always ensure proper cleaning of light switches frequently. This is because they could easily foster germs that could cause disease.

Regularly wiping light switches in the household with a damp cloth and disinfectant or even bleach can help curb the spread of diseases.

Regularly cleaning and vacuuming your home is never enough to say you are safe from diseases. As the Covid-19 pandemic taught many of us, surfaces are among the most notorious ways through which disease germs are spread.

They need to be sanitized and disinfected regularly with the appropriate cleaning agents. The above are just a few items you should ensure are cleaned thoroughly to keep disease spread under control.
