Intellectual Property in an Open-Concept World
1. The Philosophy of Ownership
While we believe that art, like suffering, belongs to everyone, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) insists otherwise. We respect the intellectual property rights of others, even if we critique the architecture they photograph.
2. Fair Use Rationale
Unhappy Hipsters is a satirical commentary site. We curate images of modern architecture and interior design to provide social criticism, parody, and humor. We believe this constitutes “Fair Use” under U.S. Copyright Law. We do not claim to own the images; we only own the existential dread we project onto them.
3. Notification of Copyright Infringement
If you are a copyright owner (or an agent thereof) and believe that any content on this site infringes upon your copyrights, you may submit a notification pursuant to the DMCA.
Please understand that we are not thieves; we are curators of melancholy. If we have used your image and you wish for it to be removed, simply ask. We prefer avoiding lawyers, as they tend to disrupt our feng shui.
To file a notice, please provide the following information in writing:
- A physical or electronic signature of a person authorized to act on behalf of the owner of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed.
- Identification of the copyrighted work claimed to have been infringed.
- Identification of the material that is claimed to be infringing (please provide the specific URL on
unhappyhipsters.com). - Information reasonably sufficient to permit us to contact you (Address, telephone number, and email).
- A statement that you have a good faith belief that use of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
- A statement that the information in the notification is accurate, and under penalty of perjury, that you are authorized to act on behalf of the copyright owner.
4. Designated Agent Contact
Please send your DMCA notices to our designated agent. Note that sending attachments may trigger our spam filters, much like how emotional baggage triggers a breakup.
- Email:
editor@unhappyhipsters.com - Subject Line: DMCA Takedown Request
5. Counter-Notice
If you believe your content was removed by mistake (or because we were feeling particularly capricious), you may send a counter-notice. However, usually, if a photographer asks us to take something down, we will simply comply. We have plenty of other empty rooms to look at.
6. Warning
Please note that under Section 512(f) of the DMCA, any person who knowingly materially misrepresents that material or activity is infringing may be subject to liability. Don’t make false claims; the karma alone will ruin your minimalist aesthetic.
