4 Ways to Give Your Couch a Makeover for Under $100

It’s not easy to give your old, beat-up couch a makeover without breaking the bank. But it’s not impossible either.

We rounded up some creative ways to revamp your couch that won’t cost more than $100, along with suggestions of where you can shop online or in-person for the materials you need.

Follow these steps and you’ll be sitting pretty on an updated piece of furniture that will look like it just came out of the showroom floor.

1. Reupholster Your Couch

Some people think reupholstering is expensive or difficult, but it can actually be quite simple – as long as you know how to do it. To give your couch a quick makeover, start by removing its cushions.

Once they’re out of their frame, flip them inside out and take them into an upholstery shop; ask if they can replicate your original coverings, or if they have suggestions on how to make it even better than the original.

Alternatively, you can look up an upholstery DIY guide and make some improvements yourself. This approach is more time and labor-intensive, but on the flip side, doing it yourself allows you to set the cushioning to be just how you like it.

And once you learn the basics, tweaking the upholstery later will be easy — you can just add material to make it squishier, or remove it for a sturdier couch.

2. Purchase a Slipcover

Don’t underestimate the impact that a slipcover can have on a couch. Not only does the cover give the couch a new look — helping it look fresh and more welcoming — but it can also change the tactile feel of using the couch.

You can choose whether to go for a thin cloth cover, a fuzzy cover that feels like velvet, or even a cover made from synthetic leather. Just be aware that covers made from non-breathable material can make the couch less comfortable in the hot weather.

If you don’t have an unlimited budget, start with a simple slipcover. Not only are they reasonably priced, but they’re also very easy to install—no sewing required.

You can find one at any home goods store or online retailer. This is also an easy DIY project if you want to be more hands-on with your furniture upgrades.

3. Replace the Legs

Sometimes, all it takes is giving your couch new legs. With that in mind, why not buy just one leg of an identical couch at your local thrift store?

You’ll save money and can often find attractive styles. All you have to do is remove your couch’s existing legs, attach them to your new find, and you’ve got yourself a new piece for cheap.

These legs usually fit any size wood frame sofa as long as they’re upholstered (and some even come with matching end caps).

Changing the legs won’t just change the look of the couch. Switching for longer or shorter legs can also help change the sitting experience, as the height of the couch is very relevant to how you use it.

Setting the couch higher or lower can make it easier to sit on, easier to get out of, it can change how your legs rest when you sit on the couch, and more. So you can make the couch more comfortable by matching its height to your height, and to how you prefer to use the couch.

Just make sure you consider the needs of other people who live with you too, of course. A lower couch can be more comfortable to lounge on with your legs stretched, but it can make it harder for older relatives to both get on and off the couch.

4. Place Baskets Under Your Sofa

Sometimes simple is best. All you need to do to give your sofa a modern makeover is place some wicker baskets under it. You can use these same baskets in your bathroom or bedroom, too.

Wicker baskets are great at holding small decorative items, toys, blankets, and more. Just throw an old blanket over them and voila – you have brand new storage space underneath your sofa.

If you’re worried about clutter getting out of hand, try placing small decorative balls in each basket that match its design or color scheme.

Not only will it look nice when you pull back the blanket, but it will also hide small toys or other objects that tend to get lost underneath furniture pieces like sofas and beds.
