6 Things to Think About When Buying a New Bed Set

Updated: April 18, 2022 by Shana Yuri

Your bedroom is the main part of your home that provides you comfort after a tiring day and ensures you sleep well.

The right bed set can help keep you comfortable, healthy, and happy in your bedroom.

So, what exactly is a bed set? Well, it’s more than just your bed. It consists of a bed frame and a headboard as the basic components.

Throw in a footboard, a mattress, a bedsheet, some pillows, and a comforter and you have the whole ensemble.

The bed set that you choose should last for at least a decade. It should serve your purpose, fulfill its functionality, and add aesthetic value to your bedroom.

To that end, there are at least six factors to consider before you buy a new bed set.

As you have figured out by now, it’s no easy feat to look for and settling on the one bed set that will give you the sweetest dreams and best sleep for years to come.

To make the best buying decision, follow the guide below.

1. Budget

Before anything else, make up your mind on how much you can shell out for a bed set. Think about it realistically and plan accordingly.

There are plenty of online stores from where you can get good deals. Also, keep a lookout for year-end and other seasonal deals at the large departmental and furniture stores.

You could land great savings on pillows, bedsheets, duvets, and comforters.

Another way of keeping within your budget is if you order a basic bed frame online and get a headboard from a different store.

This saves money as buying a frame and a headboard together from the same vendor usually means a bigger dent in the wallet. Just be careful about sizing so double-check the measurements.

Similarly, you can look for mattresses that are sold online only. These are as good as the more expensive ones you get in high-end homeware brand stores, the only drawback is that you can’t try it out before buying.

2. Headboard

It depends on the size of your room whether you should go for a headboard or not for that complete bed set look.

A headboard adds personality and aesthetic value to the bedscape. If it’s an upholstered one with materials like leather or velvet, you’re sure to add a touch of elegance to your slumber chamber.

If you want a tropical bedroom, a bamboo or rattan headboard would do the job. Provided your bedroom is large, a headboard adds a focal point in the room and enhances the overall look.

However, in a small room, a headboard can occupy much-needed breathing space and make it look and feel cramped.

On the other hand, if you have a medium-sized room, take the middle road and choose a wrought iron headboard with a simple design. It will add to the personality without cramping your space.

3. Mattress

This is the most important part of your bed set after the bed frame. Two things to look at when selecting a mattress: size and material.

Your height and the height of the person you’re going to share the bed with will determine the right mattress size. For those who are tall, always go for a queen-size mattress to make sure they fit comfortably.

The material and technology of the mattress are a big deal as they can make the difference between sweet dreams and a sore neck in the morning.

Mattress materials should keep you cool in the summer and help you get a good night’s sleep.

Foam mattresses are made from foam and are temperature-sensitive. They fit the shape of your body to give warmth and comfort for a perfect 8 hours of sleep.

Coil mattresses are the cheapest and the least comfortable. These are made from springs joined together to one piece of wire, making the whole mattress move if one occupant moves on the bed. Plus, they don’t last long.

If you are looking for a mattress that can give more comfort without being too pricey, consider a pocket-sprung mattress.

This type is made from springs that are attached to separate fabric pieces. It gives firm support to your back but isn’t as unstable as coil mattresses.

4. Bedsheets

Bedsheets are another important part of a bed set as they should be soothing to the eye and your skin. While soft white bedsheets of Egyptian cotton are preferable for some, others prefer flannel bed sheets for warmth and comfort.

For a fusion look, choose grey bed sheets and pair them with contrasting colors and patterns of pillows.

Whatever you choose, make sure the fitted bed sheet fits the mattress depth, length, and width. There’s nothing worse than a bed sheet that’s just too small.

And remember, you can choose a top sheet to go over the fitted one for an extra layer of warmth.

5. Comforter

Choose a comforter or a blanket to place on the bed to give a complete look to your bedroom set. If you live in a warm region, a light comforter or duvet filled with down or a down-alternative could keep you snug at night.

The duvet covers come in various colors and patterns to match the bed set. However, a blanket makes more sense if the night temperatures drop and you need something heavier and warmer to put you to sleep.

6. Color Palette

A color palette can take the look of your bed set to a whole new level. You can choose and change the color scheme with the change in seasons.

For example, select warm colors like yellows, oranges, and reds to use in fall and winter for a warm look. Contrast these with shades of grey. In summer and spring, stick to pristine whites.

Add bits of cool-colored throws and pillows in ocean blue, sap green, or lemon yellow for a bit of contrast.

Final Words

When you invest time in these six things to think about before buying a bed set, you’re sure to make the best buying decision.

You will have a bed set that lasts long and strong. Plus, you will definitely feel like a king or queen laying on a nice comfy bed that you enjoy being in!
