5 Easy Steps To Ensure Proper Upkeep Of Your Air Conditioner

Updated: January 25, 2023 by Shana Yuri

An air conditioner is a temperature controlling device that dehumidifies the environment and fires cool air to bring down the room temperature. Air conditioners are a must for people who dwell in hot and humid climates.

ACs need the hour to ensure comfort and a proper working environment if you run an office space. Places that experience summer-like conditions perennially need to run AC throughout.

This increases the air conditioner’s running time which calls for routine maintenance and repairs. You’d not want to compromise with the AC’s cooling intensity. For this reason, you must make some minor maintenance steps to ensure that your AC works in good condition.

Moreover, if you ignore your AC’s working condition and upkeep, you will find yourself in need of replacement. Unfortunately, AC replacements can be costly and hurt your budget.

Therefore, with some regular attention and DIY maintenance tips, you can enhance your AC’s life and performance. Here are five easy steps for you to ensure the proper upkeep of your air conditioner.

1. Clean the air filters

Air filters are the semi-permeable membrane located just under the AC’s mainframe. You can take out the air filter easily by following the steps on the owner’s manual.

Your air conditioner cleans out the air in the room too, so it takes in the polluted air containing particulate matter, dust, etc., and supplies clean and fresh air in return.

Now, filters are responsible for holding out the debris and preventing it from entering the AC’s mainframe.

Thus, in the process, the filters get dirty and require thorough and regular cleaning. In addition, unclean filters exert pressure on the compressor and pollute the room even further.

Therefore, take out the filters and wash them with the help of a high-pressure hose.

2. Pay attention to the coils

The copper coils are present in the cooling frame and require a proper detachment method to access them. Also, these coils can be sharp, and it might be risky to touch them with bare hands.

Therefore, contact your AC brand and request servicing professionals to carry out the coil cleaning task. Routine service and cleaning of these coils are important because it assists in the cooling process.

These coils are key in absorbing the room’s heat and ensuring smooth, cool airflow through refrigerants. However, minute dust particles and pollutants escape the filter and get stuck in the coils’ inner walls.

This leads to the coil’s insulation which is detrimental to the cooling process and causes the system to work harder than usual for normal cooling.

3. The condenser unit’s fan must function properly

The condenser unit is a rectangular box-like device that is placed outside of the building structure. The condenser unit is connected to the main unit through a thick aluminum wire.

The condenser unit has a fan with a powerful motor that takes in cool air from the outside and supplies it to the cooling unit.

This air then helps in keeping the cooling gas at a low temperature. If your condenser seems to be making an unusual noise or heavy vibrations, call up the company professional for an immediate check-up.

Ask the professional to inspect the fan blades for any discrepancies such as chips, cracks, etc. In case of any part damage, get it replaced as soon as possible to allow smooth functioning of the main unit.

4. Don’t overlook the condensate drain

The condensate is connected with the rear end of the condenser unit, and it works with the dehumidifier to drain out the condensed water. Unfortunately, the condensate drain is exposed to the outer world, making it susceptible to dust and other particulate matters.

These pollutants can get into the drainage system and clog it. Clogged drainage will hamper the appropriate dispensation of water.

The collected water will then sweep into the system and can cause damage to the parts. For example, moving parts made of steel and iron are vulnerable to moisture, and they can get damaged if exposed to water.

Therefore, ensure that the condenser drainage pipe is clean and allows for the smooth flow of water.

5. Call for regular maintenance by professionals

We are just regular consumers who don’t have a proper working knowledge of air conditioners. Therefore, there might be some latent issues with the device which might not be perceivable to us.

For this reason, call the company to send trained professionals to perform routine assessment and maintenance tasks.

These professionals are equipped with necessary tools which allow them to perform an in-depth inspection of the unit. They can easily troubleshoot a problem and replace faulty parts if found.

Hence, get your air conditioner serviced once every six months to ensure smooth and trouble-free performance. If company services seem expensive to you, call individual certified professionals for routine maintenance.
