After The Move: Things To Cover For A Smooth Transition

If you thought the madness was over after unloading your belongings into your new place – think again. While you no longer have to stress over purging, packing, and hiring movers, there’s still a lot to do before you can truly get comfortable in your new home and town.

So, once you arrive at your house or apartment, unpack your essentials, grab something to eat, and get a good night’s rest. You’ll need all your energy to handle this list of essential tasks listed below.

1. Clean Up

Before putting anything away, it’s best to clean your new residence from top to bottom to get rid of any germs, bacteria, or dirt that might be left behind.

Depending on the agreement with the previous owners or past tenants, you may even find that you have to discard large items like unwanted furniture, clothes, and trash.

You can contact the city hall or the sanitation department to learn about the neighborhood trash and recycle schedule and any regulations for getting rid of bulk items.

2. Unpack

Once the house is clean and the clutter is gone, you’re ready to start unpacking. Don’t get ahead of yourself by trying to unpack everything at once. In most cases, it will take you a few days to get everything where you’d like it.

Rather than overwork yourself, develop a process for unpacking. Start with the most essential items or rooms and then work your way through each room unpacking and arranging things in their appropriate spots.

3. Maintenance And Deliveries

If there’s any maintenance that needs to take place in your new home or apartment, now is the time to schedule. Whether you need to have your HVAC system serviced or you’re having a home security system installed, it’s better to do it now so you can spend the rest of your time enjoying your living space.

The same goes for deliveries like furniture or household appliances.

4. Head To the DMV

If you’ve relocated to another state, you’ll need to update the address on your driver’s license and register your car.

If you moved to California, for example, a simple online search such as “What do I need to register my car in California?” should get you all the information you need. While the rules will vary, you typically have about two weeks to get these things squared away.

5. Get The Kids Registered For School

If you have school-aged children, you’ll want to get them registered so they don’t fall too far behind on their studies. Hopefully, you’ve already done your due diligence on the school you prefer to save you time.

The registration process will vary but will require you to have documents like your child’s birth certificate, shot records, health insurance data, and transcripts from their previous schools.

If you don’t already have this information, most of it can be provided electronically for your convenience.

6. Get Familiar With Your Surroundings

If you’ve moved to a new city or state, then you’ll want to get familiar with the town to make a smooth transition.

Do you know where the local police station, firehouse, and hospital are? Are you aware of how to get to city hall? If not, research the addresses, plug them into your navigational system and take a ride.

Beyond emergency facilities, you should also be familiar with how to get to the places you and your family may need to access. Such destinations might include the grocery store, doctor or dentist office, community center, and more.

After you’ve moved into your new place, it may appear as though the bulk of your job is done and you can breathe easily. Be that as it may, there’s quite a bit more you want to complete.

By following the advice listed above, you and your family can get adjusted to your new home and community a lot easier. Then, you can sit back, relax, and enjoy this next chapter in your lives.
